Re: Chat messages are not read automaticaly with Jaws 18 on Windows 7

I know that among the blind is many users of Windows 7 with Jaws 18.0 and they no plans to upgrade to Windows 10. For example, those whose computers
are too old for Win 10.
These people are now using Skype 7, but will soon be left without a convenient tool for communication. Therefore, it would be very nice to fix read
messages from Skype on Windows 7.
I am willing to help in this, acting as a tester.
By the way, in Skype 8.25 messages were read normally.
I cann ot say exactly when its broke , because upgraded my desktop computer to Windows 10.
But on my laptop still installed Windows 7 and i don't want change it to windows 10.
Kind regards,
Alkor.

Re: Chat messages are not read automaticaly with Jaws 18 on Windows 7

Doug Lee

If you refer to messages arriving in the currently displayed conversation, I'm not sure what's going on there. The rest of this message applies to notifications produced by Skype when a message arrives in a conversation that is
not currently in focus on screen.

Under Windows 10, a lot of notifications like that go through a new Windows standard system for handling notifications; and JAWS speaks those notifications automatically. In Windows 7, many apps have their own methods of
handling notifications; and screen readers would have to include specific code to handle each app's notifications separately. In JAWS, this means custom scripts run from default.jss. My Skype 8 scripts do not include support
for Skype's notifications under Windows 7. I don't currently have a good way to test that environment, and I don't know how many blind people use Skype under Windows 7 or for how long they will. I don't have plans to address
this, but if I did it would not be by adding to the Skype 8 scripts; it would be by creating a separate set of scripts for Skype 8 and Windows 7 users, so those scripts could be left out on Windows 10 where they are not needed.

Re: Two announcements: https works on my website, and hotkey change in Skype 8

Thanks Doug for the information, I just tested the hotkeys in italian Skype 8.32 and effectively the change is in effect here as well, so I reported on my italian Skype list.
Bye!

Two announcements: https works on my website, and hotkey change in Skype 8

Doug Lee

Someone on this list recently had trouble finding scripts/add-ons on my website because of using https instead of http. https has become quite common nowadays, and sometimes preferred, for security reasons.

So I finally took the opportunity to get a certificate set up for my website. From now on, https://www.dlee.org should work as well as http://www.dlee.org. This applies to all URLs for scripts and projects I host.

Also while I'm making announcements: I observed recently that the Ctrl+F shortcut in Skype 8 for searching for contacts now searches conversations for text. The new keystroke for searching for contacts is Ctrl+Shift+S,
according to my testing. I don't know if or where this may be officially documented at this time.

Yep. I don't see a change in the help list, but yeah. Not even the /help command I was reading about works. And the the other commands are failing too.

Ok, this gets odder and odder. I looked for the command list which I found here and it lists the remotelogout command but when I tpe it into my version of skype 8 it does not work at all. I have tosay my android device is turned off so that should not make any difference in theory, but thought I'd throw that out there.

Those headings do exist in Skype 8, but Up and Down arrows jump over them quietly.

I tried to resolve this by making Up and Down arrows stop on date divider elements, but this resulted in strange behavior because subsequent arrows would act as though focus had not moved there.

I did file the following Microsoft feedback request for Skype 8:

Please allow Up and Down arrows to focus the date divider elements in chat history controls, like they already do for "Unread messages" and "Conversation read up to this point..." dividers.

When reading through the history for a conversation, I hear the time of each message being announced, but not the date. Is there a way to have Jaws announce the date as well as the time of each message, or to do as the iOS app does ad have a heading inserted at the start of each new day's messages?
