Group Notification <noreply@...>
Hello all. It's that time again, where a reminder is sent out once a month regarding the rules so here they are.
Hello to all. Hear is this month's reminder of the Skype English rules. taken right from the welcome message
Hello and welcome to the Skype English list. Here our goal is to have fun discussing various things related to skype and the screen
readers such as jaws and others. Remember the following:
1. flaming of any kind, virus warnings, spam, or anything off topic will not be tolerated.
2. Posting in HTML is aloud, but no links will work. The message will hopefully be converted to plain text. Let me know if you see
any attachments. i doubt you will.
3. Absolutely no attachments are aloud on this list. Security comes first and this will minimize the chance of viruses spreading.
4. Keep all intro threads to at least 3 or 4 messages before the thread is taken off list. That way we don't drift off topic. I
know this is going to be hard for most of us including this mod here but if we keep the messages on topic the archives will look
a lot cleaner and people will be able to find info on what they need.
5. speaking of clean archives absolutely no discussion of anything other than Skype and its use with screen readers will be tolerated on this list. If the admin notices any other topics such as google talk on this list they will close the thread immediately. I hate to do this but this is to keep the archives easier to find for old members as well as new ones.
6. When you first join this list it's normally customary to send out an intro message. Since this list is growing by leaps and bounds this will cease and desist. The new comer will now if they want to send out a question regarding the scripts, skype, gw connect, anything that this list covers. any "hello" messages and "I'm new. here is my info" messages will no longer be tolerated. We want to keep the searchable archives at the mail archive as clean as possible.
7. Before you post your question(s) to the list, please search the group archives or do a google search. This prevents the cycle of repeated messages. It also teaches you the user to search before asking for help. Oly when you have exhausted yoru resources should you come to this list. We get a lot of messages, so the archives are full of stuff dating back to at least 2005.
. Have fun and happy skyping.
Failure to abide by any of these rules, especially the last one, will get you 3 strikes then the member is band from said list.
Take care all. |

split view again wiped out from the skype
Michele Barbi
Hi guys, Skype 8.97 has been upgraded to a new hotfix but apparently the problem of split view has not been fixed yet. Googling I figured out that there is apparently a topic in Microsoft forums and also this link that lets you point to the MS community where someone else gave the idea of putting it back. If you were used to have this mode like myself, I recommend you to vote it down where it says the number of votes, currenty they're 101; according to my tests though, apparently spacebar does not work properly, so better to use enter instead, at least with JAWS 2023 latest build I found out this behaviour.

64 bit version of Skype
Michele Barbi
Hi guys, in the release notes of Skype 8.96 (which were published on delay as always), I read something about a new 64 bit version of Skype in .msi. Do you think this is only available for organizations/team admins?

Re: Did Skype disable split view?

Mod I totally agree, I am one of those actually. If they decided to take it away, they're freakin' bastards!

Re: Did Skype disable split view?
I'm using web skype right now and split view was not there yesterday. Hmm. If they did take it away without notice a bit of notice would have been nice for those ofus who used it.

Hi guys, I yesterday upgraded to Skype 8.97 for desktop, which I don't know if it has been released concerning Windows store version, and I figured out that split view is apparently no longer available. It has been autodisabled most likely and I don't find the way to put it back. Does anyone know if they wanted to disable it with no way or if there is just a bug which will be fixed in a future update? Or at least, what do you think? Bye! Report: Skype’s Annual Revenue Dropped 74.5% in Almost 10 Years
Laurent Giret FEB 14, 2023 Skype, the app that pioneered VoIP-based communication in the early 2000s has lost much of its momentum under Microsoft’s leadership. Today, a report from the French publication L’Informé (paywalled) reveals that Skype’s annual revenue dropped below the $200 million bar last year. According to Skype’s financial information filed in Luxemburg, the company’s annual revenue dropped from $722 million in 2013 to just $184.3 million in 2022, which represents a 74.5% decrease. During that same timeframe, the company also saw its annual profit drop from 90,8 million to a meager $6.35 million. Yes, that’s a 93% decrease in almost 10 years. Skype’s financial information also suggests a decline in the demand for Skype credit, which users can purchase to call mobiles and landlines to over 300 countries. The documents also revealed that Skype offering free calls to Ukraine since the conflict with Russia began last year cost the company $7.5 million. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion, and this was one of the last big Microsoft acquisitions from the Steve Ballmer era. Skype already had a “prosumer” audience back in the day, and it was also ubiquitous. While Skype was uniquely positioned to become a juggernaut on mobile, it was way too slow to evolve compared to new apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. In the past decade, Microsoft also lost years transitioning Skype from a peer-to-peer architecture to a cloud-based one. Additionally, Skype probably lost many power users after a controversial redesign initially dropped basic features such as the ability to open conversations in separate windows. If Skype is in a much better shape today, the app was still eclipsed by Zoom and Microsoft Teams during the COVID-19 pandemic. It probably doesn’t help that Microsoft now wants Teams to become its default messaging app for consumers: Windows 11 comes with a new Chat app powered by the Teams for Consumers experience, even though the “Teams” brand doesn’t really sound like something consumers would want to use to keep up with friends and family. Back in 2020, Microsoft announced that Skype had 100 million monthly active users. “Skype has been in our lives for nearly two decades, and we are here to stay,” the company said a year later in a blog post about the future of Skype. Even though Microsoft is still committed to Skype, we may come to a point where it no longer makes sense for the company to have the app coexist with Microsoft Teams, which crossed 270 million monthly active users last year. You should be able to right click on the thing you want to delete and choose delete that way. Also what version of skype, what version of windows, if windows, if not, what OS are you running skype on and its version.

I do not have plans to enhance the NVDA add-on for Skype, or do much with add-ons at this time in general. I

The languages of Windows, JAWS and Skype are all English, so this should not be a problem. As Doug said, probably Windows 11 is the cause. ----- Original Message -----

I've seen that after typing a message in Skype's chat, that text can't be read using left/right arrows. JAWS doesn't speak anything when pressing the left or right arrows. If I press the backspace key, JAWS speaks "T" each time, but not the current letter. But the text is there and I can select it and deleted if I want to do that. However I can't review and eventually correct it there. I use JAWS 2022.2207. And, probably more important, Windows 11. Is this working for you, or there is something that needs to be done in order to be able to read the written text? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michele Barbi" <barbi.michele@...> To: <main@skypeenglish.groups.io> Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2022 7:40 PM Subject: Re: [skypeenglish] Skype 8.88, date no longer read in messages list Wow, your fix with revision 224 is working! Yay! Thanks a lot! Only thing is, Google Chrome and also SmartScreen complained about the file, I just clicked run anyway and it updated the scripts correctly. Bye!
