Re: refusal of ypdating to a new version of Skype

Doug Lee

The part that gets me almost giggling resignedly here is that we're arguing over a program that costs us nothing. People sometimes get mad at me for saying things like, "The next version of the Skype scripts will no longer
support any JAWS versions older than 15.0." I do that when it lets me do better things in scripting than the older JAWS versions allowed, or when older JAWS versions simply can't handle the newest version of the application.
But people generally have the sense to realize that I'm (1) not doing it to hurt people, (2) am actually doing it for a reason, and (3) cannot be called mean because I'm giving away for free what I'm doing anyway.

The only time I can remember complaining about a change to a free program was when Roger suddenly vanished with very little warning. My complaint at that time was that they gave us little warning and also gave us nowhere to go.
Microsoft has given us way plenty of warning and has also given us not one, but two places to go (Skype 8 or Skype UWP). And despite a small number of claims in this thread, we have absolutely solid and prolific proof that at
least Skype 8 works well enough with both JAWS and NVDA to be usable. It has its quirks, but so did Skype 7. So Microsoft gave us the easiest feedback system for reporting them that I have ever seen, bar none: Open, type into a
box, press Enter, done!

Finally, if anyone wanted to complain loudly, I think it should have been me. My Command Line Interface for Skype, Clisk (http://www.dlee.org/skype/clisk), is completely unsupported after the end of this month. That's a loss of
years of my time, at least arguably.

So why don't I yell about that one? Again, Microsoft gave plenty of warning, good explanations for why they are doing what they're doing, and even delayed Skype 7's demise partly because of one feature Clisk used, that being
the ability to redirect and record sound from Skype. I will seriously miss Clisk, but that is no reason to cry foul.

In conclusion, I'd say this Skype update should best be treated like a hurricane; and that hurricane actually has a name: Cloud. Cloud infrastructure is why this update is happening. Skype, as I said before, is changing how it
communicates. It is starting to use a cloud structure. Skype 7 was not ready for that and never will be. So Microsoft gave an evacuation order, with several months' warning - which is unusual for a weather bulletin lol. But
really, in this storm, if we cling to our islands, we truly will end up lost at sea.

as has been stated in the official notice from ms, they will no longer be
supporting Skype 7 or classic as it's now known. this means that you will
either be forced to update, or your classic skype will begin to stop
working until it no longer works entirely.

yeah and how much of that data loss could have been avoided if people employed standard backup practices?

That is not limited to blind people only. That's a human condition. people don't regularly backup, and as a result, they do an update, something goes wrong with it, and they lose their data. well, they were warned. Every time a major update has been released, the warning is always there, right for all to see, backup your data otherwise there is the possibility you'll lose it. if you don't take that to heart, then blind or not, it's your own fault if you lose it.

but again, in terms of skype, and back to my original point, MS can, have and will deploy updates as they like, and as we signed up for their service, we accepted that to be the case. by installing it, we gave our tacit approval fore them to update as they like.

Please, this is a list to help people run Skype, not bemoan the fact it's changing far beyond anything you're comfortable with.

Let go of this idea of deprecated software being better, because it really isn't. and learn to work with what we have. learn also to give constructive criticism as opposed to I want this back, or, I hate this vendor or, pooh pooh to that organisation because they don't do things how "I" want them.

well, congratulations on limiting yourself, because, quite frankly, as much as I enjoy using my mac, and find it not only intuitive and a pleasure to work with, There are some tasks that are just easier done on windows. That's not to say they can't be done with apple, but sometimes, I find, it's more trouble than it's worth to even attempt it at times, so I go with what I know works.

I do nto dislike either ecosystem and will happily work within both. I don't always agree with something either one does, but I will not sit there and ask them to go back to code that is full of holes at best. I'd rather be in a position to provide them feedback so that they can improve upon what they are releasing than ask them to keep something that quite frankly in the current environment looks quite ugly, not only from an eyecandy perspective, but from a code perspective as well.

I might also add, that apple and google also are similar in how they make you update, be it hardware or software.

the only way you're going to get any joy and keep what you want around for years is with GNU/Linus, and what's that cost? 50 cents to burn it to a DVD dump it in your drive, boot up, run the live installer, reformat the drive, and bingo a fully customiseable operating system that you can make look, feel and work how you want and keep it that way. oh, and with even more limitations than apple or google or ms. either way, there's good and bad points for all of them.

Hi Doug and all,

I just installed Skype eight and your new script. Still under French Windows 7, it works okay but I cannot use the prefix key nore can I change it. The scripts seem to be well installed, as insert Q reports Revision 60 for  Skype Windows desktop 8 electron

I wonder if it is because my Skype language is set to French?

Hi all

I found three settings on Microphone:

default communication device, internal microphone, or record for playback

for speakers, I found, default communication device and speaker/headphones

How about auto microphone, unmute Microphone, and ringing device options

Which ones shall I use because I haven't able to get it working for me.

With new version of Skype, I could never get Skype to where someone can hear me, and I tried to set it up and no go with that one.

Somewhere around the end of this month, Skype classic will simply stop working. I don't know if it will refuse to log in, refuse to run, auto update without asking, or what. But Microsoft is clear on saying that Skype 7,
classic, will no longer function. Microsoft is changing the methods of communication among our Skypes, so older clients would naturallly start having problems anyway.

Hi all,

What if you refused to update to a new version of Skype? I like the Skype
Classic because it is easier for me to navigate on Skype Classic than Skype
8.30, and I could never get anyone to hear me on Skype 8.30 any longer, and I
tried everything and no go with Skype 8.30

Thanks,

Josephine
