What is unpredictable here, is not the app interface, or
screenreader commands to work with it, it's what's going to come
out of people's brains and be translated in to emails with their
arguments as to why something shouldn't change.
I'll grant you, change for change sake is not, altogether a good
thing, nor is it a reason to alter how something looks, feels or

why things should remain as they are. it is, quite frankly old

holes that can be exploited by those with few to no scruples. I

we'd still be making macros and typing long strings of commands

If the virtual cursor is on, it

This is why I needed to re-change
back the old-style hotkeys used by JAWS like
Control+Insert+Home and Control + Insert + Tab, and prefer to
use the letters just for their main purpose of typing letters.
If for example the forms mode is
on and the cursor is in an edit field and by mistake I press
Control+Insert+tab, JAWS warns me that the forms mode is on,
but if I press an "e", it would just type that letter, which
is not OK, because I may type more "e" for jumping to next
edit fields, and I would need to lete the "eeee" text.
Of course I also use the letters
as web keys sometimes, but only when I am sure that the
virtual cursor is on, like right after opening a web page.
The configurable applications are

The web interface is
worse in my opinion because it require more
attention and it can't be used blindly without
waiting for the screen reader to read what it should
read. This is because the commands are not so sure,
the interface is not so predictable, it is more
flexible and new things can appear and we might push
wrong buttons if for example we tab 3 times fast
then press enter without waiting for JAWS to read
what's on the screen.
This is why the web
interface is never faster than a native interface.
In addition, we are not so sure if the virtual
cursor is on, or the PC cursor, so it involves more
attention also.
A common use of Skype 7
and Skype 8 I guess that it is not so different,
although for the moment Skype 8 still has some big
disadvantages like missing the split view and no
global hotkeys, but re-learning the new interface
and developing the memory muscle to be able to use
it without listening to all messages read by the
screen readers might take again a few months at
least. Plus supplemental efforts. OK, but I guess
there should be some advantages for supplemental
efforts. I haven't found them in the articles that
praise Skype 8.
I don't say that the
new version is worse or better for everybody ,
because everyone has their own style of working and
requirements. I just said that I couldn't find any
improvement that matters for me, just like other
people that say that they like it for whatever
reasons.
So Skype 8 is worse
than Skype 7 for me, just like Windows 7 was and
will ever be worse than Windows XP for me.
If after many years of
learning and changing the style of working the
result is that the new product decreases the
productivity, than it is clearly a worse and less
accessible product. It is not just the fact that on
short term it involves some efforts.

I had a talk with the Microsoft

More info on the update to
Skype version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope
you're all enjoying the latest
updates to Skype version 8 for
desktop, mobile, and tablet
devices. We wanted to share a
few more details on the ongoing
update to Skype version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the
latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype
version 8?
The update from version 7 to
version 8 allows us to unify the
experience of using Skype across
all desktop and mobile
platforms. Unlike older
versions, all version 8
applications are optimized to
work in conjunction with our
modern, mobile-friendly cloud
services architecture, which has
allowed us to deliver features
such as video messaging and
mobile group video calling over
the past couple years. With a
unified experience and with all
applications now no longer
having to support legacy
architecture, our engineering
teams can deliver features and
quality improvements to
customers much more quickly.
What can you expect over the
next several months?
We're sending an email to
people still using older Skype
versions so they know the update
is coming. We published a blog
post and have communicated the
change in this forum, but we
want to be sure everyone who
might be impacted by this change
is well-informed. We expect
everyone who might be impacted
to receive an email notification
by the end of October.
Then we'll start requiring
people to update to Skype
version 8 in waves over the next

updates to version 14 as we
update version 8.
We'll continue to update Skype
version 8 and version 14 based
on your feedback and communicate
what's changing as we go.

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community
"we live, whether we like it or not".
Yes I know that. But if I don't like something, I
like to tell it. I don't like the hypocritical positive atitude just for
having a good image and falsely appear nice to others. A negative message
that informs about a problem is more constructive than a positive message that
doesn't bring new information that might be useful for changing
something.
Probably it was very constructive the negative
opinions about Skype 8 sent by the people, that made Microsoft change their mind
and continued to improve it.
"it is not the community that has to change to suit
us, it is us that has to change and adapt to live in the greater
community".
Well, I don't agree with this. And the best example
are all the efforts made by the sighted for inventing the accessibility APIs,
and the accessibility in general. This is a way of the greater community to
adapt itself to the needs of the blind and people with other disabilities. If
the sighted people don't have a problem, they might not know that this thing is
a problem for the blind, unless they don't express it.
Another prove is a law that protects the
people with disabilities in my country, that probably copies a similar law from
another EU country, explicitly says that the society should adapt to the people
with disabilities, not the other way around. Well, I agree with you that the
society can't make infinite efforts to adapt to us, and that we should also make
efforts to adapt, and finally of course that we will need to make those efforts,
but when those efforts are really useless, without any benefits when compared
with the previous situation, I can't say that it is something good.
I saw some people on the list telling that they
like Skype 8 more than 7, but I haven't seen any reason for that. I heard that
Skype 8 sounds better. Well, I don't have absolutely any problem with the sound
on Skype 7. It sounds great. Other reasons? (for Skype on Windows)
"Be greatful that we can even use it at
all".
By saying that, it looks that we should consider
the discrimination something normal, and that we should be greatful when we are
not discriminated. We compete with the sighted, and if they can have access
to more and new things, so their accessibility to new services increases, our
accessibility should increase the same. Otherwise, even if we have access to
more and more things, the difference between the blind and sighted becames
greater, which means that we are disadvantaged, which is not OK at
all.
Of course I am greatful to the devs, to those who
made JAWS and other screen readers, to Doug that really made Skype accessible,
but this doesn't mean that we should not tell anything if something is worse for
us than before, not better.

Subject: Re: [skypeenglish] More info on

that's a rather narrow view to adopt, quite frankly, because we live,
whether we like it or not, in a world where being sighted, is in the majority,
no matter how much some of us may rail against such a thing. Ultimately, it is
not the community that has to change to suit us, it is us that has to change
and adapt to live in the greater community. That is not to say, however, that
some things can't be done to insure the transition is as smooth and as
seamless as possible.
I don't always use the camera on my phone, but I have come to see the
necessity of being able to utilize such a thing in order that my sighted
compatriots are able to take in the environment around me so that I may be
able to get a better idea of same or simply to give them an "ooh, aah",
moment.
Do not be quick to dismiss a feature or function, just because you
personally cannot take advantage of it. Be greatful that we can even use it at
all, and offer the developers constructive feedback in order that they may
provide us a better service to insure our continued communication with our
family and friends.

it because it doesn't offer some features previously offered, however it
doesn't offer additional features that could be helpful for
me.
So yes, of course I will need to re-learn it,
but just because I am forced by Microsoft, not because without that force it
would have been something helpful.
As an example, it would have been helpful to
accept API calls for voice calls and voice recording and sending/receiving
chat messages. But I don't think Skype 8 offers this. It says something
about pictures, which don't have any importance for me, because I can't see

I agree. I haven't heard about any real
improvement *for the blind*, but I heard just about
disadvantages.
For me the biggest disadvantage is the web
interface, and this won't be changed for sure.
I have read about the "split view" in the to
do list of features, and this is something good if it refers to the
possibility of distinct windows for different chats.
Too bad that it was listed as the last to do
feature.
I also read something about hotkeys, and this
might be also something good if they will provide global hotkeys for
accessing Skype from other applications, at least for answering a
call.

I had a talk with the Microsoft Disability Help Line today about the

More info on the update to Skype version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope you're all enjoying the latest
updates to Skype version 8 for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices.
We wanted to share a few more details on the ongoing update to Skype
version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype version 8?
The update from version 7 to version 8 allows us to unify the
experience of using Skype across all desktop and mobile platforms.
Unlike older versions, all version 8 applications are optimized to
work in conjunction with our modern, mobile-friendly cloud services
architecture, which has allowed us to deliver features such as video
messaging and mobile group video calling over the past couple years.
With a unified experience and with all applications now no longer
having to support legacy architecture, our engineering teams can
deliver features and quality improvements to customers much more
quickly.
What can you expect over the next several months?
We're sending an email to people still using older Skype versions
so they know the update is coming. We published a blog post and have
communicated the change in this forum, but we want to be sure
everyone who might be impacted by this change is well-informed. We
expect everyone who might be impacted to receive an email
notification by the end of October. Then we'll start requiring
people to update to Skype version 8 in waves over the next several
months. Not everyone will be required to update at once. Desktop:
First wave begins on 11/1/2018 Mobile devices and tablets: First
wave begins on 11/15/2018 We strongly recommend you update now,
prior to being required to do so, to avoid any interruption in
service. Find out how to download the latest Skype versions here https://www.skype.com/upgrade-skype/. Skype
version 14 is available for Windows 10 PCs in the Microsoft Store
for Skype Insiders. It is based on version 8, but has additional
features to better integrate with the platform. You can run version
8 for desktop and version 14 for Windows 10 PCs at the same time on
your PC. We'll keep releasing updates to version 14 as we update
version 8. We'll continue to update Skype version 8 and version
14 based on your feedback and communicate what's changing as we

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community
I consider all lost functionality,
capabilities and usability as accessibility problems, because
the accessibility issues are not only those that
totally blocks the accessibility, but also those that diminishes it and made the
information less accessible for us than for sighted.
Some capabilities are much more important for the blind
than for the sighted, so if they are lost, they might not mean very much for the
sighted, but it may mean much for some of the blind.

My complaints about Skype 8 have absolutely nothing to do with
a ccessibility. Rather, they are all about lost functionality and
capabilities. My biggest complaint is the loss of the ability to add new
incoming parties to a Skype call. In Skype 7, this was a piece of cake as long
as the caller was in the receiver's contact list, or the receiver allowed
anyone to call them. Microsoft verified yesterday that in Skype 8 this
capability does not exists.

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community
Well, the web keys are not predictable themselves.
Even on simple web pages.
What is for example the letter e used?
If the virtual cursor is on, it moves the focus to
the next edit field. If the virtual cursor is off, it types the letter
e.
This is why I needed to re-change back the
old-style hotkeys used by JAWS like Control+Insert+Home and Control + Insert +
Tab, and prefer to use the letters just for their main purpose of typing
letters.
If for example the forms mode is on and the cursor
is in an edit field and by mistake I press Control+Insert+tab, JAWS warns me
that the forms mode is on, but if I press an "e", it would just type that
letter, which is not OK, because I may type more "e" for jumping to next edit
fields, and I would need to lete the "eeee" text.
Of course I also use the letters as web keys
sometimes, but only when I am sure that the virtual cursor is on, like right
after opening a web page.
The configurable applications are very OK, because
they allow us to adapt them to us, so we are not forced to adapt to
them.

Te interface is quite predictable. I use it every day and just use my web
keys. The chat thing is always tab 1 etc. It really is a breeze to use.
On 28 Sep 2018, at 13:53, Octavian Rasnita wrote:
Yes, this is true. I would like to test it, but
Microsoft doesn't assure me that if I won't like it I will be able to just
close it and continue to use Skype 7 while it is still
available.
The web interface is worse in my opinion
because it require more attention and it can't be used blindly without
waiting for the screen reader to read what it should read. This is because
the commands are not so sure, the interface is not so predictable, it is
more flexible and new things can appear and we might push wrong buttons if
for example we tab 3 times fast then press enter without waiting for JAWS to
read what's on the screen.
This is why the web interface is never faster
than a native interface. In addition, we are not so sure if the virtual
cursor is on, or the PC cursor, so it involves more attention
also.
A common use of Skype 7 and Skype 8 I guess
that it is not so different, although for the moment Skype 8 still has some
big disadvantages like missing the split view and no global hotkeys, but
re-learning the new interface and developing the memory muscle to be able to
use it without listening to all messages read by the screen readers might
take again a few months at least. Plus supplemental efforts. OK, but I guess
there should be some advantages for supplemental efforts. I haven't found
them in the articles that praise Skype 8.
I don't say that the new version is worse or
better for everybody , because everyone has their own style of working and
requirements. I just said that I couldn't find any improvement that matters
for me, just like other people that say that they like it for whatever
reasons.
So Skype 8 is worse than Skype 7 for me, just
like Windows 7 was and will ever be worse than Windows XP for
me.
If after many years of learning and changing
the style of working the result is that the new product decreases the
productivity, than it is clearly a worse and less accessible product. It is
not just the fact that on short term it involves some efforts.

Actually all of them are advantages. I don't like when people, and I've
heard this on twitter, not this list, say that skype 8 is inaccessible
because it's too hard to use. Not enough people are giving this a chance
in my humble opinion. I've ben sing it since prabably October off and on

I have read about the "split view" in the
to do list of features, and this is something good if it refers to the
possibility of distinct windows for different chats.
Too bad that it was listed as the last to

I also read something about hotkeys, and
this might be also something good if they will provide global hotkeys

I had a talk with the Microsoft Disability Help Line today about
the loss of a feature conference coordinators need--the ability to add
more people to a running/open Skype call. One person told me there's a
plus button on the screen to allow answering third and successive
callers, but not even Microsoft could find it. MS did tell me that,
for now, what I have to do is reject the incoming caller, then use the
"Add People" button and call them back! I tried that, and it doesn't
always work the way one would think it does, or should, therefore,it's
unreliable. The MS DL person took my info and said it would be passed

More info on the update to Skype version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope you're all enjoying the latest
updates to Skype version 8 for desktop, mobile, and tablet
devices. We wanted to share a few more details on the ongoing
update to Skype version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype version 8?
The update from version 7 to version 8 allows us to unify the
experience of using Skype across all desktop and mobile platforms.
Unlike older versions, all version 8 applications are optimized to
work in conjunction with our modern, mobile-friendly cloud
services architecture, which has allowed us to deliver features
such as video messaging and mobile group video calling over the
past couple years. With a unified experience and with all
applications now no longer having to support legacy architecture,
our engineering teams can deliver features and quality
improvements to customers much more quickly.
What can you expect over the next several months?
We're sending an email to people still using older Skype
versions so they know the update is coming. We published a blog
post and have communicated the change in this forum, but we want
to be sure everyone who might be impacted by this change is
well-informed. We expect everyone who might be impacted to receive
an email notification by the end of October. Then we'll start
requiring people to update to Skype version 8 in waves over the
next several months. Not everyone will be required to update at
once. Desktop: First wave begins on 11/1/2018 Mobile devices
and tablets: First wave begins on 11/15/2018 We strongly
recommend you update now, prior to being required to do so, to
avoid any interruption in service. Find out how to download the
latest Skype versions here https://www.skype.com/upgrade-skype/. Skype
version 14 is available for Windows 10 PCs in the Microsoft Store
for Skype Insiders. It is based on version 8, but has additional
features to better integrate with the platform. You can run
version 8 for desktop and version 14 for Windows 10 PCs at the
same time on your PC. We'll keep releasing updates to version 14
as we update version 8. We'll continue to update Skype version
8 and version 14 based on your feedback and communicate what's
changing as we go. Your feedback on the update to Skype version

More info on the update to Skype
version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope
you're all enjoying the latest
updates to Skype version 8 for
desktop, mobile, and tablet
devices. We wanted to share a few
more details on the ongoing update
to Skype version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the
latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype
version 8?
The update from version 7 to
version 8 allows us to unify the
experience of using Skype across
all desktop and mobile platforms.
Unlike older versions, all version
8 applications are optimized to
work in conjunction with our
modern, mobile-friendly cloud
services architecture, which has
allowed us to deliver features
such as video messaging and mobile
group video calling over the past
couple years. With a unified
experience and with all
applications now no longer having
to support legacy architecture,
our engineering teams can deliver
features and quality improvements
to customers much more quickly.
What can you expect over the next
several months?
We're sending an email to people
still using older Skype versions
so they know the update is coming.
We published a blog post and have
communicated the change in this
forum, but we want to be sure
everyone who might be impacted by
this change is well-informed. We
expect everyone who might be
impacted to receive an email
notification by the end of
October.
Then we'll start requiring people
to update to Skype version 8 in
waves over the next several
months. Not everyone will be
required to update at once.
Desktop: First wave begins on
11/1/2018
Mobile devices and tablets: First
wave begins on 11/15/2018
We strongly recommend you update
now, prior to being required to do
so, to avoid any interruption in
service. Find out how to download
the latest Skype versions here https://www.skype.com/upgrade-skype/.
Skype version 14 is available for
Windows 10 PCs in the Microsoft
Store for Skype Insiders. It is
based on version 8, but has
additional features to better
integrate with the platform. You
can run version 8 for desktop and
version 14 for Windows 10 PCs at
the same time on your PC. We'll
keep releasing updates to version
14 as we update version 8.
We'll continue to update Skype
version 8 and version 14 based on
your feedback and communicate
what's changing as we go.
Your feedback on the update to
Skype version 8
Many of you have taken the time
to share your thoughts on this
update. Thank you. We appreciate
it! We learned how important it is
to you to maintain feature parity
with older Skype versions and
we're working towards that goal.

Skype support told me that there is a plus button but at least for me I cannot see that plus button.
I have requested to Doug Lee to look at it and revise His JAWS script so He can bring that plus button into His script.
Last time when He revised His script, it was Skype 8.28!
I have requested Him via this mailing list!

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community
Steve Matzura <number6@...>
My complaints about Skype 8 have absolutely nothing to do with
a ccessibility. Rather, they are all about lost functionality and
capabilities. My biggest complaint is the loss of the ability to
add new incoming parties to a Skype call. In Skype 7, this was a
piece of cake as long as the caller was in the receiver's contact
list, or the receiver allowed anyone to call them. Microsoft
verified yesterday that in Skype 8 this capability does not
exists.

is something good if it refers to the possibility of

Too bad that it was

I also read something
about hotkeys, and this might be also something good

The web
interface is worse in my opinion because it
require more attention and it can't be used
blindly without waiting for the screen
reader to read what it should read. This is
because the commands are not so sure, the
interface is not so predictable, it is more
flexible and new things can appear and we
might push wrong buttons if for example we
tab 3 times fast then press enter without
waiting for JAWS to read what's on the
screen.
This is why the
web interface is never faster than a native
interface. In addition, we are not so sure
if the virtual cursor is on, or the PC
cursor, so it involves more attention also.
A common use of
Skype 7 and Skype 8 I guess that it is not
so different, although for the moment Skype
8 still has some big disadvantages like
missing the split view and no global
hotkeys, but re-learning the new interface
and developing the memory muscle to be able
to use it without listening to all messages
read by the screen readers might take again
a few months at least. Plus supplemental
efforts. OK, but I guess there should be
some advantages for supplemental efforts. I
haven't found them in the articles that
praise Skype 8.
I don't say
that the new version is worse or better for
everybody , because everyone has their own
style of working and requirements. I just
said that I couldn't find any improvement
that matters for me, just like other people
that say that they like it for whatever
reasons.
So Skype 8 is
worse than Skype 7 for me, just like Windows
7 was and will ever be worse than Windows XP
for me.
If after many
years of learning and changing the style of
working the result is that the new product
decreases the productivity, than it is
clearly a worse and less accessible product.
It is not just the fact that on short term
it involves some efforts.

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community

If ther is I don't know it yet. But I always just tab to the tabs (no pun intended) then right arrow from there. I can also I think pull up the item chooser if I really want to go quicker.
Take care and be blessed.

Yes, this is true. I
would like to test it, but Microsoft doesn't assure me

The web interface is
worse in my opinion because it require more attention
and it can't be used blindly without waiting for the
screen reader to read what it should read. This is
because the commands are not so sure, the interface is
not so predictable, it is more flexible and new things
can appear and we might push wrong buttons if for
example we tab 3 times fast then press enter without
waiting for JAWS to read what's on the screen.
This is why the web
interface is never faster than a native interface. In
addition, we are not so sure if the virtual cursor is
on, or the PC cursor, so it involves more attention
also.
A common use of Skype 7
and Skype 8 I guess that it is not so different,
although for the moment Skype 8 still has some big
disadvantages like missing the split view and no
global hotkeys, but re-learning the new interface and
developing the memory muscle to be able to use it
without listening to all messages read by the screen
readers might take again a few months at least. Plus
supplemental efforts. OK, but I guess there should be
some advantages for supplemental efforts. I haven't
found them in the articles that praise Skype 8.
I don't say that the new
version is worse or better for everybody , because
everyone has their own style of working and
requirements. I just said that I couldn't find any
improvement that matters for me, just like other
people that say that they like it for whatever
reasons.
So Skype 8 is worse than
Skype 7 for me, just like Windows 7 was and will ever
be worse than Windows XP for me.
If after many years of
learning and changing the style of working the result
is that the new product decreases the productivity,
than it is clearly a worse and less accessible
product. It is not just the fact that on short term it
involves some efforts.

I have read
about the "split view" in the to do list of

Too bad that it

I also read
something about hotkeys, and this might be

I had a talk with the Microsoft Disability

More info on the update to Skype
version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope
you're all enjoying the latest
updates to Skype version 8 for
desktop, mobile, and tablet
devices. We wanted to share a few
more details on the ongoing update
to Skype version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the
latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype
version 8?
The update from version 7 to
version 8 allows us to unify the
experience of using Skype across
all desktop and mobile platforms.
Unlike older versions, all version
8 applications are optimized to
work in conjunction with our
modern, mobile-friendly cloud
services architecture, which has
allowed us to deliver features
such as video messaging and mobile
group video calling over the past
couple years. With a unified
experience and with all
applications now no longer having
to support legacy architecture,
our engineering teams can deliver
features and quality improvements
to customers much more quickly.
What can you expect over the next
several months?
We're sending an email to people
still using older Skype versions
so they know the update is coming.
We published a blog post and have
communicated the change in this
forum, but we want to be sure
everyone who might be impacted by
this change is well-informed. We
expect everyone who might be
impacted to receive an email
notification by the end of
October.
Then we'll start requiring people
to update to Skype version 8 in
waves over the next several
months. Not everyone will be
required to update at once.
Desktop: First wave begins on
11/1/2018
Mobile devices and tablets: First
wave begins on 11/15/2018
We strongly recommend you update
now, prior to being required to do
so, to avoid any interruption in
service. Find out how to download
the latest Skype versions here https://www.skype.com/upgrade-skype/.
Skype version 14 is available for
Windows 10 PCs in the Microsoft
Store for Skype Insiders. It is
based on version 8, but has
additional features to better
integrate with the platform. You
can run version 8 for desktop and
version 14 for Windows 10 PCs at
the same time on your PC. We'll
keep releasing updates to version
14 as we update version 8.
We'll continue to update Skype
version 8 and version 14 based on
your feedback and communicate
what's changing as we go.

Skype version 8

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community
that's a rather narrow view to adopt, quite frankly, because we
live, whether we like it or not, in a world where being sighted,
is in the majority, no matter how much some of us may rail against
such a thing. Ultimately, it is not the community that has to
change to suit us, it is us that has to change and adapt to live
in the greater community. That is not to say, however, that some
things can't be done to insure the transition is as smooth and as
seamless as possible.
I don't always use the camera on my phone, but I have come to see
the necessity of being able to utilize such a thing in order that
my sighted compatriots are able to take in the environment around
me so that I may be able to get a better idea of same or simply to
give them an "ooh, aah", moment.
Do not be quick to dismiss a feature or function, just because
you personally cannot take advantage of it. Be greatful that we
can even use it at all, and offer the developers constructive
feedback in order that they may provide us a better service to
insure our continued communication with our family and friends.

Hey I see nothing wrong with the current
web interface of Skype 8.x. I use NVDA 2018.3.2 and it works
great. Like Sarah said learn your HTML commands. Heck you
need to use those anyway regardless what screen reader you
use.

I agree. I haven't heard
about any real improvement *for the blind*, but I heard
just about disadvantages.
For me the biggest
disadvantage is the web interface, and this won't be
changed for sure.
I have read about the "split
view" in the to do list of features, and this is something
good if it refers to the possibility of distinct windows
for different chats.
Too bad that it was listed as
the last to do feature.
I also read something about
hotkeys, and this might be also something good if they
will provide global hotkeys for accessing Skype from other
applications, at least for answering a call.

This is nothing but propaganda. Almost all the functional
stuff that message addresses existed in Skype 7. The
window-dressing ... don't know and don't care for obvious
reasons.
I had a talk with the Microsoft Disability Help Line
today about the loss of a feature conference coordinators
need--the ability to add more people to a running/open
Skype call. One person told me there's a plus button on
the screen to allow answering third and successive
callers, but not even Microsoft could find it. MS did tell
me that, for now, what I have to do is reject the incoming
caller, then use the "Add People" button and call them
back! I tried that, and it doesn't always work the way one
would think it does, or should, therefore,it's unreliable.
The MS DL person took my info and said it would be passed
on to the developers.
In my unhumble opinion, development implies forwar/
positive movement. Skype 8 is none of those things.

More info on the update to Skype version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope you're all
enjoying the latest updates to Skype version 8
for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices. We
wanted to share a few more details on the
ongoing update to Skype version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype version 8?
The update from version 7 to version 8 allows
us to unify the experience of using Skype across
all desktop and mobile platforms. Unlike older
versions, all version 8 applications are
optimized to work in conjunction with our
modern, mobile-friendly cloud services
architecture, which has allowed us to deliver
features such as video messaging and mobile
group video calling over the past couple years.
With a unified experience and with all
applications now no longer having to support
legacy architecture, our engineering teams can
deliver features and quality improvements to
customers much more quickly.
What can you expect over the next several
months?
We're sending an email to people still using
older Skype versions so they know the update is
coming. We published a blog post and have
communicated the change in this forum, but we
want to be sure everyone who might be impacted
by this change is well-informed. We expect
everyone who might be impacted to receive an
email notification by the end of October.
Then we'll start requiring people to update to
Skype version 8 in waves over the next several
months. Not everyone will be required to update
at once.
Desktop: First wave begins on 11/1/2018
Mobile devices and tablets: First wave begins on
11/15/2018
We strongly recommend you update now, prior to
being required to do so, to avoid any
interruption in service. Find out how to
download the latest Skype versions here https://www.skype.com/upgrade-skype/.
Skype version 14 is available for Windows 10 PCs
in the Microsoft Store for Skype Insiders. It is
based on version 8, but has additional features
to better integrate with the platform. You can
run version 8 for desktop and version 14 for
Windows 10 PCs at the same time on your PC.
We'll keep releasing updates to version 14 as we
update version 8.
We'll continue to update Skype version 8 and
version 14 based on your feedback and
communicate what's changing as we go.
Your feedback on the update to Skype version 8
Many of you have taken the time to share your
thoughts on this update. Thank you. We
appreciate it! We learned how important it is to
you to maintain feature parity with older Skype
versions and we're working towards that goal.

Te interface is quite predictable. I use it every day and just use my web keys. The chat thing is always tab 1 etc. It really is a breeze to use.

The web interface is worse in my opinion because it
require more attention and it can't be used blindly without waiting for the
screen reader to read what it should read. This is because the commands are not
so sure, the interface is not so predictable, it is more flexible and new things
can appear and we might push wrong buttons if for example we tab 3 times fast
then press enter without waiting for JAWS to read what's on the
screen.
This is why the web interface is never faster than
a native interface. In addition, we are not so sure if the virtual cursor is on,
or the PC cursor, so it involves more attention also.
A common use of Skype 7 and Skype 8 I guess that it
is not so different, although for the moment Skype 8 still has some big
disadvantages like missing the split view and no global hotkeys, but re-learning
the new interface and developing the memory muscle to be able to use it without
listening to all messages read by the screen readers might take again a few
months at least. Plus supplemental efforts. OK, but I guess there should be some
advantages for supplemental efforts. I haven't found them in the articles that
praise Skype 8.
I don't say that the new version is worse or better
for everybody , because everyone has their own style of working and
requirements. I just said that I couldn't find any improvement that matters for
me, just like other people that say that they like it for whatever
reasons.
So Skype 8 is worse than Skype 7 for me, just like
Windows 7 was and will ever be worse than Windows XP for me.
If after many years of learning and changing the
style of working the result is that the new product decreases the productivity,
than it is clearly a worse and less accessible product. It is not just the fact
that on short term it involves some efforts.

Re: More info on the update to Skype version 8 - Microsoft Community
(smile)
I like to learn something only if it helps me to do
additional things that couldn't be done before.
In this case, I find that I need to spend time to
learn to use the same application, that involves a bigger effort in using it
because it doesn't offer some features previously offered, however it doesn't
offer additional features that could be helpful for me.
So yes, of course I will need to re-learn it, but
just because I am forced by Microsoft, not because without that force it would
have been something helpful.
As an example, it would have been helpful to accept
API calls for voice calls and voice recording and sending/receiving chat
messages. But I don't think Skype 8 offers this. It says something about
pictures, which don't have any importance for me, because I can't see
them.

Hey I see nothing wrong with the current web interface of
Skype 8.x. I use NVDA 2018.3.2 and it works great. Like Sarah said learn your
HTML commands. Heck you need to use those anyway regardless what screen reader
you use.

I agree. I haven't heard about any real
improvement *for the blind*, but I heard just about
disadvantages.
For me the biggest disadvantage is the web
interface, and this won't be changed for sure.
I have read about the "split view" in the to do
list of features, and this is something good if it refers to the possibility
of distinct windows for different chats.
Too bad that it was listed as the last to do
feature.
I also read something about hotkeys, and this
might be also something good if they will provide global hotkeys for accessing
Skype from other applications, at least for answering a call.

This is nothing but propaganda. Almost all the functional stuff that
message addresses existed in Skype 7. The window-dressing ... don't know and
don't care for obvious reasons.
I had a talk with the Microsoft Disability Help Line today about the loss
of a feature conference coordinators need--the ability to add more people to
a running/open Skype call. One person told me there's a plus button on the
screen to allow answering third and successive callers, but not even
Microsoft could find it. MS did tell me that, for now, what I have to do is
reject the incoming caller, then use the "Add People" button and call them
back! I tried that, and it doesn't always work the way one would think it
does, or should, therefore,it's unreliable. The MS DL person took my info
and said it would be passed on to the developers.
In my unhumble opinion, development implies forwar/ positive movement.
Skype 8 is none of those things.

More info on the update to Skype version 8
Hello, Skype community! We hope you're all enjoying the latest
updates to Skype version 8 for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices. We
wanted to share a few more details on the ongoing update to Skype
version 8 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/07/16/upgrade-to-the-latest-version-of-skype-for-desktop/
to keep you up to speed on the latest info.
Why update everyone to Skype version 8?
The update from version 7 to version 8 allows us to unify the
experience of using Skype across all desktop and mobile platforms.
Unlike older versions, all version 8 applications are optimized to work
in conjunction with our modern, mobile-friendly cloud services
architecture, which has allowed us to deliver features such as video
messaging and mobile group video calling over the past couple years.
With a unified experience and with all applications now no longer having
to support legacy architecture, our engineering teams can deliver
features and quality improvements to customers much more quickly.
What can you expect over the next several months?
We're sending an email to people still using older Skype versions so
they know the update is coming. We published a blog post and have
communicated the change in this forum, but we want to be sure everyone
who might be impacted by this change is well-informed. We expect
everyone who might be impacted to receive an email notification by the
end of October. Then we'll start requiring people to update to Skype
version 8 in waves over the next several months. Not everyone will be
required to update at once. Desktop: First wave begins on
11/1/2018 Mobile devices and tablets: First wave begins on
11/15/2018 We strongly recommend you update now, prior to being
required to do so, to avoid any interruption in service. Find out how to
download the latest Skype versions here https://www.skype.com/upgrade-skype/. Skype
version 14 is available for Windows 10 PCs in the Microsoft Store for
Skype Insiders. It is based on version 8, but has additional features to
better integrate with the platform. You can run version 8 for desktop
and version 14 for Windows 10 PCs at the same time on your PC. We'll
keep releasing updates to version 14 as we update version 8. We'll
continue to update Skype version 8 and version 14 based on your feedback
and communicate what's changing as we go. Your feedback on the update
to Skype version 8
Many of you have taken the time to share your thoughts on this
update. Thank you. We appreciate it! We learned how important it is to
you to maintain feature parity with older Skype versions and we're
working towards that goal. Here's a few examples of features we've
