jaws scripts for skype

John Sanders

Hi my name is John Sanders.

I have a question: I am running the latest version of skype.

I'm using windows 7 64 bit with jaws 15.

Whenever I go in to the settings dialog in skype, jaws is not reading me
in some sections of the dialog box what its supposed to be.

How should I go about fixing this?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

John Sanders

Re: Skype! What version is the right version and What is going on with all of these skypess

Hi james

Microsoft are in the process of phasing out skype 7 but there's no dateline
for this to be completed as yet.

If you have windows 7 or 8 you can use skype electron, as doug calls it, and
download the scripts from dlee.org/skype/electron.

If you have windows ten, and are not able to use skype 7, you should be
using UWP, and again there are scripts on doug's site for this.

Below is something doug wrote earlier this week in an email and it might be
useful to you.

I think Skype 8 and Skype UWP both have pros and cons. I actually asked
Microsoft's @SkypeSupport on Twitter yesterday (Tuesday) for information on
the expect length of life of Skype 8, since it is currently intended only
for older versions of Windows. I await an answer.

I find Skype 8 more responsive than Skype UWP at this time, but I also find
Skype UWP to have more features than Skype 8. This includes letting us know
which contacts are active versus inactive, though not with the notifications
you requested earlier. (Skype 8.16 does include "Online" by some of my
contacts in the Conversations list, but I don't yet know the exact
significance of this since it is not shown for all contacts.)

Older versions of Skype UWP often froze on me for up to a minute. Older
versions of Skype 8 outright crashed about as often as that. I have not seen
either of these problems in updated versions.

Hello!

I am using Windows10/64-bit version. On my desktop is the old Skype
7++++++; then there is a "Skype Web or something like that; and I hear
7++++++you
guys talking about skype up, etc; and I don't know that people are talking
about and I don't know how to use skype now. When I open skype 7+++++, I
get the regular screen I have been using and I can choose which skype user
will be using the program by arrowing to my skype name or my wife's skype
name and then logging in. However, when I open up the new skype that is now
on my system, it opens up into the last person's account with everything
there, contacts, etc; however, as far as I see, there is no way to change
skype users. Will the new skype totally replace skype 7++++++ on our
computers? It is confusing. I think I heard they are no longer updating
skype 7+++++ and the scripts on Dug's page say scripts for this version are
no longer valid (at least I think it says this but I may be wrong); then I
installed the new scripts and so forth and so on. Help! I am totally lost!
Someone awake me when all of this is sorted out! Finally! Which skype
version should I be using on my windows10/64-bit computer; please give
actual executable file name and url so I can download and install it.

Well I don’t think it has anything to do with Doug’s scripts mike. If a user hasn’t shared contact INFO with you well it is what it is. And like Doug also pointed out since push notifications got introduced a few years back its hard to tell with Skype 7.x and older who’s really online or off etc.

Good evening all,
regarding notifications of on-line or not statuses being spoken:
First may I say I am not the Skype Guru that many who are on this list are but here is what I have noticed with what I'm getting back from Skype.

I'm using Jaws 18, with Windows 7, and Skype 7.xxx version, with Doug's B scripts.

I am hearing the following:
on-line
not on-line
Away
and this person hasn't shared details with you
and I also hear whether or not there are new messages for me from any given person
I don't know if this is typical for our average user but this is what I hear and so I just assumed this was just the proper function of Skype, Jaws, and Dougs good scripting.

There are so many little tweeky settings between Jaws, and Skype that I'm amazed that any of it works for any of us, with any consistency! LOL

Skype 7 showed us presence indicators but they lost reliability as phones started showing up and setting up push notifications. I think that may be why presence indication has been changing lately.

Skype 7 sometimes says "Online" beside a contact name, as I said before; but not always, and I've never seen "Offline" or another status there yet.

Skype UWP uses the term "Active" to denote someone that is online, as far as I can tell.

So I think we will get presence indicators back, in some form. I just don't know exactly how they will work.

"To Michael, on the "Away" status being caused by people forgetting to log out of Skype:

You would not only have to log out but also disable push notifications, on iOS at least. Most of us don't do that I'm sure. :)"

Hey Doug, I actually knew that in the past but I didn't expect I had to check it out once again after plenty of time. I think you helped me a lot though, because I discovered to be away recently instead of offline. So I opened Skype on my iPhone, I went to the notifications settings inside the app, and figured out that yeah push notifications where active. I tried to disable them, and I am looking for some cavias to verify this one.

Did you try JAWS 2018 if you do have another SMA for JAWS. If not, try NVDA

Answering at least three emails from this thread in one:

To Jerry and Octavian, on Skype 7 showing Online or Away for offline contacts:

When an iPhone, and possibly other mobile technology, is set up to send notifications regardless of whether the app is running, this is represented in at least Skype 7 by the "Away" status. Logically this makes some sense: To
receive notifications, you have to be somewhat reachable but not so directly as if you were online. :) I don't like this alteration, but I sort of understand it.

To Michael, on the "Away" status being caused by people forgetting to log out of Skype:

You would not only have to log out but also disable push notifications, on iOS at least. Most of us don't do that I'm sure. :)

Exactly.
But, I've noticed something with Skype 7.
Sometimes, it shows a contact as online, or Away, when said contact is
actually offline.
It seems the older versions were more reliable on that score.

I consider it useful to know if someone is online, and even how long it's
been since a status was known, which has occasionally been possible for us
to see in Skype. When a friend of mine is going through storms, for
example,
this may help tell me if there is a power loss at that end.

Skype 7 showed us presence indicators but they lost reliability as phones
started showing up and setting up push notifications. I think that may be
why presence indication has been changing lately.

Skype 7 sometimes says "Online" beside a contact name, as I said before;

Skype UWP uses the term "Active" to denote someone that is online, as far

So I think we will get presence indicators back, in some form. I just
don't know exactly how they will work.

If the computer's shut down, you're offline.
As long as skype's running, if you're in Invisible mode, someone can
still call you and it will ring, and you can take the call.
I never call anyone unless it shows the contact as online.

Hi. Which is better, skype 8, run in compattability mode for windows 10
or the native windows 10 app and accessibility. And also did hear new
conversations in my group and jaws announced the name of the
conversation or contact, announced I had 2 updates, so thats what I was
talking about. Pity, not able to know if they are online or not.
Thanks.

Skype 7 sometimes says "Online" beside a contact name, as I said before;
but not always, and I've never seen "Offline" or another status there yet.

Skype UWP uses the term "Active" to denote someone that is online, as far
as I can tell.

So I think we will get presence indicators back, in some form. I just
don't know exactly how they will work.

Thanks.

I don't consider them reliable as long as anyone can set their status to invisible. And on the other hand, it is good that it is possible to set the status to invisible.

I use Skype 7, but in the list of contacts always appear either online, offline or away.

Or you ment that these don't appear only on Skype on mobiles?

I consider it useful to know if someone is online, and even how long it's been since a status was known, which has occasionally been possible for us to see in Skype. When a friend of mine is going through storms, for example,
this may help tell me if there is a power loss at that end.

Exactly.
But, I've noticed something with Skype 7.
Sometimes, it shows a contact as online, or Away, when said contact is actually offline.
It seems the older versions were more reliable on that score.

OK, I thought that calling them can be a way to see if they are online.
If they are online it will ring, otherwise the connection will be broken.

I might need to send them a message or start the class with them. I need to make sure hey are on line before calling them so they can pick up  etc.

By curiousity, why do you want to know if somebody is online?

Hi. Which is better, skype 8, run in compattability mode for windows 10 or the native windows 10 app and accessibility. And also did hear new conversations in my group and jaws announced the name of the conversation or contact, announced I had 2 updates, so that’s what I was talking about. Pity, not able to know if they are online or not.
Thanks.
