Subject: [skypeenglish] being locked out of skype account. failure of account recovery process

Hi all

My account has been locked out as got hacked.

I have tried unsuccessfully to go through the account recovery process.

The form is complex at best. Once you get passed filling out your personal details and audio capture, then nominating another email address to be contacted at, you then have to provide details of 3 contacts and 3 recent email subjects you have sent to them. Also details about any purchases. After doing this, the feedback was I had not sent sufficient information to recover my account.

I’m interested to know if anyone has done this successfully. if so, how was this done.

Otherwise it will mean creating a new account.

Thanks and regards

Could you give me the direct download link for skype scripts for Jaws. I am using Jaws 2018, Skype 7.4 and Windows 7. Thanks a lot.

I just checked my work account and so far it's fine. We'll see what happens though. I hope I don't get locked out of that account or I won't be too happy.

Take care all. And hope that problem gets solved.

Skype won't connect

Léonie Watson <tink@...>

Hello,

Skype 7.4 won't connect. The default installer wouldn't work so I had to download the offline installer. That installed it, but now when I enter my username and password, it just says it can't connect.

I've completely removed Skype and reinstalled it. I've removed 7.4 and installed 8.1 in compatibility mode, and this lets me connect without difficulty. I've also tried the Win10 app and this too lets me connect ok. It's just 7.4 that won't.

Using Skype 8 and/or the Win10 app isn't something I want to do. Any suggestions on what's happening with 7.4 gratefully received... I'm tearing my hair out.

Thanks.

Using the Win10 app

Léonie Watson <tink@...>

Hello,

Further to my message about Skype 7.x no longer connecting, I've been trying to use the Win10 app with Doug's scripts.

Is there a way to get Jaws to announce messages as they appear in the current chat window? Looking at the release notes, I think this feature isn't currently implemented n the scripts, so I wonder if there's any timeline on this?

Thanks
Léonie

Re: Using the Win10 app

Doug Lee

I tried to implement that but had the same problem I have in Skype For Business (SFB): I get more announcements than I want because LiveRegionChange events fire not only for new messages but also for messages as they scroll
onto the screen. My normal way around that sort of thing is to watch the message list for additions; but again like in SFB, the list is not all available to me at any given time, and my view of it is too dynamic for me to
establish what is a new message versus just a newly rendered one.

I don't currently have a timeline for the feature of in-window message announcements. I honestly thought Microsoft might get to it before I did. Skype 8 natively says "Message sent" when you send a message, so clearly Microsoft
knows how to implement a real-time announcement like this...

Have you spoken to Ms about this? Maybe if you can established a contact between them and yourself this might be implemented in the future, I hope?

Re: Skype won't connect

I've just been told by Skype support that this is a deliberate move by Microsoft. They're stopping people from accessing Skype on the old 7.x desktop versions, in order to push everyone onto the 8.x and/or Win10 app versions.

By the looks of things you'll be ok as long as you don't log out and/or try to reinstall Skype. For the time being at least. No idea how long it'll be before even that is stopped.

Wow, um, not a fair move as  skype for mac, at least for me and skype 8, it's very hard to use and not like what skype 4 was. It is a horable interface and I'm not sure why they decided to go the way they did in terms of the interface. Bad move on skype's part.

Re: Skype won't connect

Yeah I'm not too happy as I teach ESL and do it through skype. I don't want to quit my job due to accessibility, but I'm afraid I'll have to schedule a meeting with my boss and we will have to discuss other ways such as zoom etc. I really do want to keep my job as I really love it and am making very good progress with the company and all of my students, but zoom and accessibility also need some work as  I can't access a contact list to start a meeting with a student. Of corse they can always call in but sending chats is a bit annoying as they don't get a copy of the history. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for letting us know Doug. I really don't know what Microsoft is up to. So many features are not included in the app (no split screen view, so no way to easily switch directly between active conversations, no keyword based notifications, no way to customise sounds, to name just a few).

Thanks for all you do with the scripts. They're invaluable.

Re: Using the Win10 app

Léonie Watson <tink@...>

The ones I mentioned (with a little more detail):

1. The ability to be notified when keywords are used in a Skype chat, and for those keywords to be specific to a particular Skype chat/channel.

We use Skype for work (though not Skype for Business). That means I'm included in a Skype chat for every project and/or team I'm part of (and there are a lot). With the UWA it's only possible to have notifications on or off. That means I either have to turn them on and have a notification ping interupt me every couple of seconds, or turn them off and be none the wiser when someone says something I should be paying attention to.

2. The ability to switch and/or cycle between current conversations.

I used to use the split screen view in 7.x, so I could easily alt tab between current conversations. Even without split screen I think it was possible to shift tab between open conversations. In the UWA you have to go back to the chat/channels list, find the one you want to switch to and activate it. This makes quickly swapping between concurrent conversations cumbersome in the extreme.

3. The ability to hear new messages as they arrive in the current chat.

In the UWA you have to move back/forth between the chat history and the message field to discover what someone has posted.

4. The ability to customise the Skype/Windows notifications.

At the moment the UWA uses Windows notifications to notify you about new messages. In part this is useful because it tells me which chat/person the message came from (which 7.x didn't), but on the other hand it's really noisy because the entire message is also automatically announced. The only way to manage this is by disabling notifications, but see above for problems there.

4. The ability to manage privacy settings.

The UWA has no way to customise how long messages are kept for (if at all). It also has no way to delete your message history.

5. The ability to customise sounds.

The UWA uses the standard Windows notification sound. This makes it hard to differentiate between a Skype notification and any other (unless you stop to listen in case there's a Skype message announced immediately after the sound).

If you're typing at the time of the notification there's a good chance you'll hear the ping but override the screen reader before it has a chance to announce the message. If you're doing something else like reading with your screen reader when a notification comes in, you don't get the notification at all.

6. The ability to tell which chat you're about to post a message into.

The title doesn't seem to change no matter which chat you're in. I think your scripts attempt to solve that, but I'm not having any luck with it so far. I know I'm new to the UWA, but I've already posted things in the wrong place, and the thought of doing that with a client's confidential information makes me very nervous.

notifications, no way to customise sounds, to name just a few).

Thanks for all you do with the scripts. They're invaluable.

Hello,

Further to my message about Skype 7.x no longer connecting, I've been trying
to use the Win10 app with Doug's scripts.

Is there a way to get Jaws to announce messages as they appear in the current
chat window? Looking at the release notes, I think this feature isn't
currently implemented n the scripts, so I wonder if there's any timeline on
this?

Thanks

I just posted an article on the active Microsoft phaseout of Skype 7, otherwise known as Skype Classic Desktop for Windows:

I hope this helps Skype 7 users during this time of unfortunately forced transition, and while I catch up with script writing for Skype 8. :)
