Re: skype UWP question

hi doug

the second question might be the more difficult to answer.

yes, that is the exact message that pops up.

how often does it repeat on one start up? numerous. maybe eight but
probably more.

i'm running windows 10, jaws 2018, skype version 7.40.103, scripts
version 6.22B and revision version 983.

hope that info helps

Hello Joseph,
This is not screen reader dependent, it can be turned on in Options.
Go into Skype menu, select Tools, then Options, and in the tree view
select Call settings. The second check box will be Answer Calls
Automatically.

Hi Sarah,
Oh really? I mean, really really? Nothing is greater than my favorite
lovely Alt+digits for reading chat messages (gods bless Doug for such
an invention!), they have been helping me a lot these years,
especially in crowded chats or if I was missing something important.
And I already start weeping those keystrokes since they won't be
available in Skype UWP, Skype 8 and all these modern-shmodern versions
with whistles, bells and a great lack of usability (even if they are accessible).
Just my humble opinion, of course.

No I think actually nvda is working better than jaws with skype, at least the skype I' using on my windows. I dunno what that is but it has a menu bar and was shipped with my computer. Or maybe I grabbed it from ninite? I dunno. But yeah nvda works very well and is easier then other screen readers I've used in the past with skype.

dear Inamuddin, Thank you for your prospective on the history of Skype and accessibility.

As for my own point of view, if we have something that works we don't need to push the accessibility curve to the breaking point by always wanting to have the latest greatest of the newest!
I have found that if you always want to be on the cutting edge you will always be getting cut up.

A very wise friend told me over 30 years ago when I first started using a talking computer to never forget...
"companies that develop software earn their money by always trying to get you to buy the latest greatest they are selling;
He then told me, Unfortunately I would have to try to earn a living using what I just bought from them!
If something is still working, there is no reason to change it until it no longer met my needs.

Just for the record, I'm still using Jaws 17, Windows 7, and a version of Skype that was recommended by one of you some time last year.

My plan for 2018 is a very simple one, to give Mr. Lee all the time he needs to finish working his magic.
Also I'm giving Jaws all the time they need to work the bugs out of Jaws 2018.
Then I plan to move into Windows 10

I don't see any reason to do otherwise unless someone has an employment situation where they are at risk of losing their income and are being forced to live on the cutting edge just to survive.

My humble thanks to all of you on this list who over the last five years have kept me in the know with Skype.

Dear friends, today I’d like to talk about Skype Classic verses Modern Skype.
Before I say anything, I’d like to let you know that English is not my mother tongue so it is quite possible that I may make grammatical mistake.
I therefore would like to say sorry if you do not understand what I wanted to say!
The matter of fact is that there are 3 Skypes are available.
Skype classic which is Skype 7.40.151 which was updated on October 6th 2017.
JAWS script for this Skype is still available and it is working nicely at least in my machine.
This Skype is the most accessible version for all visually challenged persons, no matter which screen reader they are using!
You Can Download It By Clicking Here
To download its JAWS script,
Please Click Here
When I started using computer for the first time, I was using windows XP with JAWS 6 and Skype version was 3.8.
As I always say that I’m very much impressed by Doug Lee who has been working harder and harder making JAWS script for Skype in order to make things accessible.
In my humble opinion we must be thankful to Him for His continuous hard working.
Since then, there have been so many changes and developments in the world of technology and Skype has no exception.
I have seen those days when a lot of resistance among visually challenged person regarding leaving Skype 3.8, but at the end what happened?
You know very well that every body had to leave that version and was forced to switch over the newer Skype versions.
Then there was a program came called GWSkype.
A lot of visually challenged people liked it a lot and still they want to use it, but Microsoft has changed its interface from MSAA to Automation making that GWSkype not accessible.
In short All I can say is that change and developments dwell in the very nature of human being.
Now we are using 3 Skypes Skype classic, which I have given the link above, Skype UWP and New Skype For Desktop.
Talking about Skype Universal Windows Platform (UWP), again we will have to be thankful to Doug Lee who had worked hard and managed to give us JAWS script for Skype UWP.
If you want to download this script,
Please Click Here
This Skype is not a full fledge desktop installer but an app for those who are using Windows 10.
What is the difference between A program and app, is another discussion which is not my topic that’s I’m not saying anything about it.
Current version of Skype UWP is 12.3.0.257
And the script is version 102.

"companies that develop software earn their money by always trying to get you to buy the latest greatest they are selling;

Skype classic which is Skype 7.40.151 which was updated on October 6th 2017.
JAWS script for this Skype is still available and it is working nicely at least in my machine.
This Skype is the most accessible version for all visually challenged persons, no matter which screen reader they are using!

This Skype is not a full fledge desktop installer but an app for those who are using Windows 10.

So here are some questions, based on what you have said here, doug:

1. does this skype 8.2 client work with windows 10, or are we going to
be

forced eventually to use Skype UPW?

2. Is skype 8.2 accessible? You said you are scripting it, and I
heard it

wasn't very accessible. I know when I tried Skype UPW by accident, I
found

that there are no menus, as is usually the case with any Windows app
from

the app store, and you have to tab around it to find whatever you
want. I

need to look at the scripts you wrote for this more closely, so I
apologize

for not being so familiar, but I think, when I first looked at them, I

noticed that you still have to tab a lot more, even with the scripts,
than

you did with previous versions, like to call someone, or hang up,
etc.? how

easy is it to use?

Skype UWP, also called Skype for Windows 10, only works on Windows 10.

Microsoft wrote a new Skype 8.12 client for use on Windows 7, 8.1, etc.
I am

not done scripting that one yet.

scripts are already out there. The ones I have not released are the
ones for

Skype 8, which is for Windows versions older than 10.

Another thing I'd like to let you know is that when Microsoft will

Windows 10 app for Skype doesn't have Skype watch and there is a

I therefore use to say that we visually challenged people should

Another encouraging thing is that JAWS script for that app is
available

though it has a lot of issues for some users.

Like I've said before. If you are running WIN 10 use the Skype app
for

WIN 10 that ships with WIN 10. We don't know when MS will kill for

has

written JAWS scripts for the WIN 10 app.

Skype Classic Verses Modern Skype

inamuddin khan

For more information about it,

Please Click Here

To my best knowledge, some of visually challenged persons has already started using it, some of us including me are thinking to start using it and a lot of us are opposing to use this program very much, just they have done in the past regarding Skype 3.8.

The third Skype is called New Skype For Desktop, which is the same in roughly every devices.

This program is for those people who are users of less than windows 10 but users of windows 10 can also use it.

If you want to download this program,

Please Click Here

The version of this Skype is: Skype 8.0.3

Friends, I have started my journey from Skype 3.8 and I have come to Skype 8.3.

In my humble opinion the brave person is one who always ready to accept changes.

If we do not use these Skypes, then how we can force Microsoft to listen to us and give us what we want and we want nothing other than accessibility!

At The end all I can say is that use these programs at least for the sake of knowing new things.

Never change  the challenges, but challenge the changes, you will be successful.

Re: Skype versions

Doug Lee

I have not seen a way to get even visual notifications when people go online or offline in Skype 8 or Skype UWP, but I welcome corrections.

In Skype UWP, use Windows+V to go to the Action Center notification for an incoming call. Tab for the caller ID, then tab farther for audio and video answering options.

I have yet to work on how to handle incoming calls in Skype 8, and I don't think I've done much with file transfers in either version.

Respected Doug and all, is there any way to know who came online and
who went ofline or who is calling or sending the file etc in Skype UWP
or new Skype for desktop?

As far as accessibility is concern, it is fine for me the only thing is
missing is notification of someone's coming or going offline!

Your prompt reply will be appreciated!

Well if you use WIN 10 you must learn how to do this yourself.

Again I’m not Doug, but to answer your question about the UWP app no there is not. Sorry. Send MS feedback through their Feedback Hub if you’d like this feature.

Respected Doug and all, is there any way to know who came online and who went ofline or who is calling or sending the file etc in Skype UWP or new Skype for desktop?

As far as accessibility is concern, it is fine for me the only thing is missing is notification of someone’s coming or going offline!

Your prompt reply will be appreciated!
