Answering at least three emails from this thread in one:
To Jerry and Octavian, on Skype 7 showing Online or Away for offline contacts:
When an iPhone, and possibly other mobile technology, is set up to send notifications regardless of whether the app is running, this is represented in at least Skype 7 by the "Away" status. Logically this makes some sense: To receive notifications, you have to be somewhat reachable but not so directly as if you were online. :) I don't like this alteration, but I sort of understand it.
To Michael, on the "Away" status being caused by people forgetting to log out of Skype:
You would not only have to log out but also disable push notifications, on iOS at least. Most of us don't do that I'm sure. :)

But, I've noticed something with Skype 7. Sometimes, it shows a contact as online, or Away, when said contact is actually offline. It seems the older versions were more reliable on that score.

I consider it useful to know if someone is online, and even how long it's been since a status was known, which has occasionally been possible for us to see in Skype. When a friend of mine is going through storms, for example, this may help tell me if there is a power loss at that end.
Skype 7 showed us presence indicators but they lost reliability as phones started showing up and setting up push notifications. I think that may be why presence indication has been changing lately.
Skype 7 sometimes says "Online" beside a contact name, as I said before; but not always, and I've never seen "Offline" or another status there yet.
Skype UWP uses the term "Active" to denote someone that is online, as far as I can tell.
So I think we will get presence indicators back, in some form. I just don't know exactly how they will work.

With other words, if you want to see if somebody is online, you just need to call him/her. So no need to see this somewhere else.
As you said, if the computer is shut down and somebody calls, Skype won't ring, so the caller will find that the other person is offline.
Some people may say that it is nice to know if the other person wants to appear online or not, because he/she might be online but might not want to be called, and this is the reason that person has set Skype to invisible. In this case, that person might be called, because he/she also has the possibility of answering or not.
It is also nice if the caller also knows if the other person is on the computer but doesn't want to talk.

If the computer's shut down, you're offline. As long as skype's running, if you're in Invisible mode, someone can still call you and it will ring, and you can take the call. I never call anyone unless it shows the contact as online.

I didn't know that. So did I understand correctly that if I am set to invisible and somebody will call me, that person will hear Skype ringing no matter if my computer is shut down, or the computer is on and Skype is logged in?

No, I can be invisible. If you call me it will till ring. I can chose to answer if I want to.
Take care

OK, I thought that calling them can be a way to see if they are online. If they are online it will ring, otherwise the connection will be broken.

I might need to send them a message or start the class with them. I need to make sure hey are on line before calling them so they can pick up etc.

Hi. Which is better, skype 8, run in compattability mode for windows 10 or the native windows 10 app and accessibility. And also did hear new conversations in my group and jaws announced the name of the conversation or contact, announced I had 2 updates, so thats what I was talking about. Pity, not able to know if they are online or not. Thanks.
