Re: Skype versions

Technically, windows 10 will work to some degree with later versions of JAWS 16. But, with all the advancements its best to stay current if you can.
I'd say that classic skype is definitely going away because Microsoft is moving you to windows 10 if you have that version. But, they usually take a long time to end support of previous versions so it won't happen tomorrow.

I understand that the classic Desktop client, Skype 7, will at some point be
left behind. I believe it is being replaced by Skype UWP for Windows 10 and
Skype 8 for older Windows versions.

You are right that there is no menu bar in Skype UWP. There are a number of
keyboard shortcuts though, both native and scripted if you use my scripts.
The manual for the scripts, which also provides information on native
keystrokes, is at http://www.dlee.org/skype/uwp/skypeuwp.htm

I regard Skype 8 as usable but less convenient than I'd like for some
things. I have been using Skype 8 exclusively for several weeks now though,
mostly to encourage myself to finish scripting it. On the positive side, I
find it to be the fastest of the three Windows clients I've worked with.

So here are some questions, based on what you have said here, Doug:

1. does this skype 8.2 client work with windows 10, or are we going to be
forced eventually to use Skype UPW?
2. Is skype 8.2 accessible? You said you are scripting it, and I heard it
wasn't very accessible. I know when I tried Skype UPW by accident, I found
that there are no menus, as is usually the case with any Windows app from
the app store, and you have to tab around it to find whatever you want. I
need to look at the scripts you wrote for this more closely, so I apologize
for not being so familiar, but I think, when I first looked at them, I
noticed that you still have to tab a lot more, even with the scripts, than
you did with previous versions, like to call someone, or hang up, etc.? how
easy is it to use?

Skype UWP, also called Skype for Windows 10, only works on Windows 10.
Microsoft wrote a new Skype 8.12 client for use on Windows 7, 8.1, etc. I am
not done scripting that one yet.

Answering items in two messages in this thread at once:

SkypeWatch: There should be no need for this, because Skype UWP uses the
Windows 10 Toast system for displaying alerts, and JAWS already speaks those
automatically.

Jerry said he wanted to wait until I finish the scripts. The Skype UWP
scripts are already out there. The ones I have not released are the ones for
Skype 8, which is for Windows versions older than 10.

Dear sir, the matter of fact is that the last update of Skype classic
came on October 6^th 2017 since then several versions of Skype UWP and
new Skype for desktop has come but nothing has come for Skype classic
meaning that Microsoft has left updating Skype classic.

Another thing I'd like to let you know is that when Microsoft will kill
that Skype classic, it will be a very bad news for most of visually
challenged persons because of two reasons.

Windows 10 app for Skype doesn't have Skype watch and there is a sharp
differences between interface of Skype classic and windows app for
Skype.

I therefore use to say that we visually challenged people should
exersize using windows 10 app for Skype so when Microsoft kills our
beloved Skype classic, we do have the habbit of using windows 10 app
for Skype.

Another encouraging thing is that JAWS script for that app is available
though it has a lot of issues for some users.

Like I've said before. If you are running WIN 10 use the Skype app for
WIN 10 that ships with WIN 10. We don't know when MS will kill for good
Skype cclassic. The WIN 10 app works great with NVDA and Doug Lee has
written JAWS scripts for the WIN 10 app.

I went to ninite just to have a look.

I couldn't find a place to see where the downloads like Skype were.

But, well done in finding it.

Well I suggest you use SKype for WIN 10 assuming you have WIN 10. Skype
classic nags and nags you to try the new Skype. I don't need a nag. It
works fine.

Can you be mor specific? Most of Skype's sounds has changed some. If
you use Skype classic their options to check in the sounds area. In
Wthe WIN 10 UWP app you can't do much at all.
